Catahoula Cur Dogs

Up Coming Litter

Josie Rose & Cadillac

My dad always said, "If you have a good dog, go back to where you got it from and breed from there".  Well some of our best dogs come from Josie and Cadillac, although we have never breed them together.  This will probably be the last litter from each.  It will be Josie's last litter.

It looks like it's finally going to happen!  We thought ole Josie had done her last do.  Approx. due date: Middle of March.

These won't last long, get your deposit in early, we only hold slots for 6 and one is already gone before actual breeding took place.

Breeding Practices, Standards and Hip Information

Most of the breeding practices and standards of our kennel are those of the early breeders of the Catahoula.  Tried and true methods, as well as, beliefs of the early breeders have had a great influence on our breeding program.  We never breed for eye color, nor do we breed for a certain color. (Although our kennel name would imply we do.)  Those who played an important part in the development of the Catahoula as a breed always advised that if your breeding program was not going to make an important contribution to the overall breed itself, YOU SHOULD NOT BREED.

HIPS - Once again, we have adopted the tried and true methods as those in the past.  We do not have our dog's hip OFA'd, nor are they Penn Hipped.  For a very important reason - You can have a dog that shows good results on all testing.  BUT  that dog is kennel kept and never truly worked, therefore, not truly tested.  (no offense to some)  I can promise you,  you take a strong dog, male or female, work them on a regular basis.  Whether it be hogs or cows, it is in a Catahoula's nature to press the extreme and if they aren't sound it will show by the time they are about 2 years.  Therefore, it is not uncommon for us to wait to breed our males and females till they are at least 3 and sometimes 4 years of age.  There is some exceptions, but only if we are sure they are physically sound..

We once had a fellow come to look at our dogs, and he inquired about what type of testing we used, I was explaining our method, and he responded we that all sounds great and wonderful, but does it work.  At that time I looked up and saw one of our females standng on top of a storage building (yes a bulding - you see - she could see into the practice pen if she got up high)  I told him to look, his eyes like to have popped out of his head, he got a good laugh.  And then I explained that she did that about 10-12 times a day, she was 5 years old at the time and if her hips weren't sound she wouldn't have made it off the ground much less at least 6 feet.
