History

The Catahoula Cur Dog originated from Native Americans of the Catahoula Lake Area in Central Louisiana.  In the 1540's Hernando DeSoto fought with the Native Americans of area and lost.  Upon his defeat, his troops abandoned trained war dogs and hunting dogs.  Local tribes adopted these dogs and cross bred them with their own domesticated wolf-like dogs.

5th Generation Catahoula Breeders.  We are Certified Breeders of the National Association of Louisiana Catahoulas, and with the Working Catahoula Association. Our dogs are registered with WCA and/or NALC.  Please see Pups available page for breeding practices, standards and hip information.

The missing link.

The only known and provable link with the Catahoula Cur Dog and Native Americans from the Catahoula Lake Area comes from the Jena Band of Choctaw Indians. Once known as the "Bowie Indians", today's tribal members are descendants of this band of Native Americans. Tuska Homma Kennels (choctaw - meaning Red Warrior) are the only decendants of this tribe that breed Catahoula Cur Dogs. This sign is at current day Jonesville, La. 17 miles southeast of Jena, home of Tuska Homma Kennels.
